Songs For and About the Youth

Teenagers are often the topic or the theme of songs and their consequent lyrics. After all, this time and period in one’s life is often the most colorful and the most poetic; the overwhelming number of literature and films created to depict this period can attest to that. In fact, this topic already has a number of sub-genres, among them the popular coming-of-age film or literature. Music is no different. A number of lyrics try to recreate that feeling of wonder, excited, rebellion, confusion, and other emotions connected to being a teenager. Some of these songs may not directly pertain to the youth, and a number of these songs were written several years ago, but their lyrics still successfully mirror current realities in the life of a teen.Of course, Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is never left out when people talk about songs about the youth. This is an example of a song that does not exactly talk about teenagers or the youth per se. In fact, while this Nirvana song is iconic, many criticized it for being somewhat nonsensical. Parts of the lyrics (such as these iconic lines: “I feel stupid and contagious / Here we are now / Entertain us / A mulatto / An albino / A mosquito / My libido”) does not make sense at all when taken as is, but many say the lyrics speaks of the general feeling of rebellion against the institution and the standards set by the older generation. This makes perfect sense, considering how the composition of the music is very avant-garde, and how the lyrics were not crafted traditionally. Belle and Sebastian, on the other hand, has a song title “We Rule the School,” with its lyrics describing the general feeling of being detached from the “real world” during high school, a precocious time in one’s life. The lyrics go: “On a beech tree, rudely carved / "NC loved me" / Why did she do it? / Was she scared? / Was she bored?” This already cites the need for teenagers to be accepted through their actions, that each of their action require the proper motivation that not only stems from within but also from the pressures of other people and of particular circumstance. This was further developed by the song when the lyrics later cite a specific example. “Do something pretty while you can / Don't fall asleep / Skating a pirouette on ice is cool” and “Do something pretty while you can / Don't be a fool / Reading the Gospel to yourself is fine” demonstrate this in the lyrics.

Great Songs and Lyrics

A karaoke party is a great way to spend time with friends. After all, nothing can beat the charm and appeal of singing some of the greatest tunes with friends over a few cans of beer and some chips. But nothing can make a karaoke party more successful than choosing appropriate songs. Of course, any song would make for a great karaoke party—but during this type of event, it is best to just let your hair down and enjoy the moment without taking it too seriously. Here are some songs that have appropriate music and enjoyable lyrics that can heighten the enjoyment of your karaoke party.First, consider fun, upbeat songs. Try to stay away from sappy and common ballads. Instead, try singing songs like Hanson’s “Mmmbop.” “Mmmbop” is probably one of the biggest pop songs ever to debut—it reached the number one stop in more 20 countries, demonstrating its pop appeal and attracting pop hooks in its lyrics. What makes this a fun karaoke song is the chorus of the lyrics, which is composed of a string of incomprehensible words. The lyrics go: “MMMBop, ba duba dop ba do bop, / Ba duba dop ba do bop, / Ba duba dop ba do. Oh yeah, / MMMBop ba duba dop ba do bop, Ba duba dop ba do bop.” When read closely, the lyrics suggest that people should hold on to friendship, since it can disappear “in an mmmbop.” Listen to you and your friend mumble this hard to sing lyrics and you’ll see why it is a must in every karaoke party.Of course, it is hard to completely stay away from ballads and love songs. But if you really have to sing a love song, go for the ones that you can sing in a campy approach. A best song for this is “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler. The intention of the song’s lyrics is laudable—in fact, the lyrics were actually inspired by the classic novel Wuthering Heights. Yet there’s something about the song that makes it hard to take seriously. The utter seriousness of how this was performed actually makes this song more enjoyable. There are fun romantic songs to sing too. A favorite is “Get Here” by Oleta Adams. The lyrics of this song have been ridiculed and criticized; a notable example of this is its inclusion in VH1’s Worst Romantic Songs list, which included songs by Lionel Ritchie and Meatloaf, among others. Yet this song is easy to sing, and its lyrics somewhat unrealistic but unbelievably romantic and relatable. The part of the lyrics that goes “I don’t care how you get, just get here if you can” is its most popular trademark, making it a favorite karaoke song.

Songs From the Heart

And as music becomes a means to an end — pushing a separate product, whether it’s a concert ticket or a clothing line, a movie scene or a Web ad — a tectonic shift is under way. Record sales channeled the taste of the broad, volatile public into a performer’s paycheck. As music sales dwindle, licensers become a far more influential target audience. Unlike nonprofessional music fans who might immerse themselves in a song or album they love, music licensers want a track that’s attractive but not too distracting — just a tease, not a revelation.

My thought on music

With the stunning global success of Apple’s iPod music player and iTunes online music store, some have called for Apple to “open” the digital rights management (DRM) system that Apple uses to protect its music against theft, so that music purchased from iTunes can be played on digital devices purchased from other companies, and protected music purchased from other online music stores can play on iPods. Let’s examine the current situation and how we got here, then look at three possible alternatives for the future.
To begin, it is useful to remember that all iPods play music that is free of any DRM and encoded in “open” licensable formats such as MP3 and AAC. iPod users can and do acquire their music from many sources, including CDs they own. Music on CDs can be easily imported into the freely-downloadable iTunes jukebox software which runs on both Macs and Windows PCs, and is automatically encoded into the open AAC or MP3 formats without any DRM. This music can be played on iPods or any other music players that play these open formats.

The first alternative is to continue on the current course, with each manufacturer competing freely with their own “top to bottom” proprietary systems for selling, playing and protecting music. It is a very competitive market, with major global companies making large investments to develop new music players and online music stores. Apple, Microsoft and Sony all compete with proprietary systems. Music purchased from Microsoft’s Zune store will only play on Zune players; music purchased from Sony’s Connect store will only play on Sony’s players; and music purchased from Apple’s iTunes store will only play on iPods. This is the current state of affairs in the industry, and customers are being well served with a continuing stream of innovative products and a wide variety of choices.
Some have argued that once a consumer purchases a body of music from one of the proprietary music stores, they are forever locked into only using music players from that one company. Or, if they buy a specific player, they are locked into buying music only from that company’s music store. Is this true? Let’s look at the data for iPods and the iTunes store – they are the industry’s most popular products and we have accurate data for them. Through the end of 2006, customers purchased a total of 90 million iPods and 2 billion songs from the iTunes store. On average, that’s 22 songs purchased from the iTunes store for each iPod ever sold.

Sweeps Music Oscars the film slumdog

A.R. Rahman won Academy Awards for best original score and best song for "Jai Ho" from "Slumdog Millionaire," earning the Bollywood music veteran his first two Oscars. "God is great - thank you!" Rahman said. "The essence of the film is about optimism. All of my life I've had a choice of hate and love, and I've chosen love—and I'm here."The medley of best original song nominations featured Rahman performing "O Saya" from the middle of the audience, surrounded by dancers and taiko drums. John Legend and the Soweto Gospel Choir took the vocals on Peter Gabriel and Thomas Newman's "Down to Earth" from "Wall-E," and Rahman returned to wrap up the performance of "Jai Ho" alongside Legend. Gulzar, who wrote the lyrics for "Jai Ho," also won an Academy Award for the song.Gabriel, in attendance at the event, previously said he wouldn't perform "Down to Earth" because he felt the timing of the performance would give it short shrift.Selections from the nominated scores were played by the Academy Awards orchestra and conducted by Michael Giacchino, who was nominated last year for the score to "Ratatouille" and who also does the music for the ABC television show "Lost."Host Hugh Jackman opened the telecast with a tongue-in-cheek recession-themed song-and-dance tribute to the show's nominated films, including a "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" set made out of lawn chairs and pizza boxes and Anne Hathaway taking a besequined turn as Richard Nixon.Another performance number of the evening was a Baz Luhrmann-directed tribute to movie musicals, and featured Jackman, Beyonce, "High School Musical's" Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens and "Mamma Mia!'s" Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper doing brief takes on everything from "Singin' in the Rain" to "Grease" to Luhrmann's own "Moulin Rouge."

Music Services Opens Doors

The company is already gearing up to administer interests in songs performed by Elvis Presley, Celine Dione, The Platters, Ike & Tina Turner, Count Basie, Little Richard, Cher, Cass Elliot, Donnie and Marie Osmond, and Dinah Shore.DeBet is looking to land its first catalog but has signed a number of smaller deals, some for administering a single song. "We are doing co-administration in some of the Platters songs written by Paul Robi and by Buck Ram," said White. She says her firm will focus on placing older catalog into current television and cable programs. "Often older catalog need to be closely monitored. Sometimes songs played in other markets get translated incorrectly or the registration is old and can get knocked out of the system. Also, so many songs have the same name you have to check that the right song is getting the income," she said.White, who will continue in her position with David Rose Publishing, has traveled to Ghana, West Africa, Jamaica, and other Caribbean islands, and believes music she was exposed to in these locales has great potential in the U.S. As a result, DaBet is now representing Ugandan hip-hop artist Crazy Native, American jazz composer and pianist Max Haymer, and adult contemporary singer and composer Steve Cooke from Australia, who composed "Working for the USA.""We recognize that there are still vast opportunities for the classic and emerging catalogs if you have a team with the zeal and focus to nurture these wonderful works along to full potential," White said in a statement. "That's why we felt a separate company from David Rose Publishing could fill an important niche in the marketplace."To date White presides over a catalog which contains more than 500 copyrights. White can handle all aspects of publishing, including royalty analysis, collections, licensing, and communication with licensees, publishers, sub-publishers, and co-administrators both in and outside the U.S.
